Texas Cooks Compete for $1 Million

Stephanie Hollowell, Dallas' bake off contestant

Dallas, TX – Tomorrow Morning at Dallas' Fairmont Hotel the winner of the 43rd Pillsbury bake off will be awarded $1-million dollars.

North Texas contestants include Robin Hill of Arlington, Frances Pietsch of Flower Mound, Gwen Beauchamp of Lancaster, and Stephanie Hollowell of Dallas.

KERA's Shelley Kofler reports four North Texas are vying for the prize and today they cooked up a storm.

Dallas, TX – In 1958, Cliburn's performance of Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano concerto helped secure the 23 year old Texan his Moscow victory. It's become his signature piece. Playing it in the Russian capitol was a thrill for Cliburn, who'd dreamed of visiting the city from a young age, but had only left the U.S. for Canada.

American Airlines Aiming for Normal Operations by Monday

Dallas, TX – American Airlines CEO Gerard Arpey is apologizing for a THIRD day of massive cancellations while the wiring on the airline's MD-80 fleet is inspected. The airline cancelled 922 flights today. In a conference call update, Mr. Arpey said they are working very hard to accommodate displaced passengers.

American Passengers Grounded

Dallas, TX – On Wednesday afternoon John Wood was scheduled to return to Los Angeles from Dallas. Instead he sat fuming at DFW airport after his American flight home was cancelled because of the reinspections. Wood he was irritated:

Wood: This is the worst ever. They said the best we can do is get you outta here tomorrow morning, but that flight may very well be cancelled, too. So what am I supposed to hang my hat on, you know?

Storms Tear Through Texas

Dallas, TX – Storms that roared across North Texas early this morning tore off roofs and toppled trees.

KERA's BJ Austin has more. Neighbors on Lakeland off Fyke Road in Carrollton were out early looking at the damage and wondering when the power would come back on. The big tree in Chris Lamendola's front yard was lying across the street leaving only the tiniest margin for a car to squeeze by. He says he didn't hear the big tree fall, but he sure heard the storm and the warnings.

Cannaday to Face Valdez in Dallas Sheriff Race

Dallas – Former Dallas County Sheriff Jim Bowles will not get his old job back. He was overwhelmed in yesterday's republican run-off race by former Irving Police Chief Lowell Cannaday. Cannaday got 89-percent of the vote compared to Bowles 11% . KERA's Shelley Kofler reports the stage is now set for November.

More AA Cancellations, More Stranded Passengers

Dallas, TX – At DFW Airport's Terminal D this morning the lines were long at the American Airlines ticket counters. Susie Sharp from Tulsa sat on her suitcase, surrounded by dozens of fourth thru 12th grade church choir members, and other chaperone parents, on their way to Toronto to perform, and sightsee.

American Airlines Flights Grounded

Dallas, TX – As American works to reticket passengers, bus them to nearby locations or find flights on other carriers, the airline warns there may be more cancellations tomorrow.

American Spokesman Charly Wilson says passengers scheduled on American should check the AA-Dot-Com website for the status of their flights. The airline says it will also assist those who are stranded.
