Dallas, TX – The Omni Convention Center Hotel opens in downtown Dallas Friday. There are high hopes for the 500 million dollar, city-owned hotel because if it falters, taxpayers pick up the tab. KERA's BJ Austin reports.

Dallas, TX – Many Texans believe the biggest issues facing the country are different than those facing Texas. That's the result of a statewide poll conducted by the University of Texas and the Texas Tribune. KERA's Shelley Kofler takes a look.

Texas voters identified the economy and unemployment as the most important problems facing the country, but said in Texas immigration is the biggest concern.

Dallas, TX – A group of seniors rallied at Congressman Jeb Hensarling's Dallas office today. They had a simple message; cutting senior benefits won't fix the deficit. KERA's Courtney Collins reports.

"Mr. Garcia, I brought some more petitions and postcards for Mr. Hensarling."

Some two dozen members of the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans trooped up to Representative Jeb Hensarling's office to speak out against cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Dallas, TX – Texas added more than 15,000 jobs in September but unemployment is still higher than a year ago. KERA's Shelley Kofler has more on why.

In the past year more than 188,000 additional workers have joined the Texas labor force. So while there's been a gain in new jobs, there's also been an increase in the number looking but unable to land a position. That's resulted in the unemployment rate rising from 8 percent to 8.5 percent.

Dallas, TX – A laid-off Dallas teacher shared the stage with President Barack Obama Tuesday as he lobbied for his jobs bill at Eastfield College in Mesquite.

Dallas social studies teacher Kimberly Russell lost her job when state budget cuts triggered teacher layoffs. She put a face on unemployment as she endorsed the President's plan.

Russell: I'm hoping Congress will pass the American Jobs Act to help teachers like me get back to work soon.
