Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst got some good news this weekend in his uphill battle to hold onto his job. A former foe, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, told KERA he will be endorsing Dewhurst. The news comes two days after Dewhurst, the incumbent, and Dan Patrick, the frontrunner, debated in Houston.

In today's All Things Considered local block from the KERA Newsroom: We’ve heard from parents, educators, and elected officials on the controversial home-rule plan to remake Dallas schools, but what do students think? Bill Zeeble talks to some students about the changes they want to see. And All Things Considered host Justin Martin talks with Texas Tribune executive editor Ross Ramsey about tonight’s lieutenant governor run-off debate.

Republican lieutenant governor candidates, waging their election battle, have used video clips without permission from a debate at KERA and made questionable claims. PolitiFact Texas at the Austin American-Statesman is setting the record straight.

Editor’s note, April 25: KERA has received numerous queries about whether the station played any role in a commercial released last week by the campaign of Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. Texans have asked whether we gave permission for the campaign to use images of our reporter asking a question during KERA’s Jan. 27 debate. They’ve asked whether our reporter agreed to appear in the Dewhurst ad. The answer to both is an emphatic “No.” The campaign did not ask KERA for permission to use the footage, and when the ad was released on April 16, KERA immediately objected. The Dewhurst campaign responded by saying it would not pull the ad. We've posted the full debate question, answer and follow-ups to provide context for the brief clip that’s seen in the ad. You can see them, and the full debate, below.

As they traded barbs during a televised debate on Tuesday night, Republican lieutenant governor candidate Dan Patrick and San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro covered a range of issues beyond the set topic of immigration policy, including the November general election and abortion rights.

In Fort Worth today, Sen. Dan Patrick, a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, again said he supports equal pay for men and women but he doesn't think government should enforce it. Patrick and incumbent Lt. Governor Davis Dewhurst will face each other in a May 27 runoff for their party's nomination. Dewhurst, who presides over the Texas Senate, has said he would again allow an equal pay measure to be voted on if enough senators wanted that to happen. The legislature passed a bill last session allowing employees more time to file equal pay claims but Gov. Rick Perry vetoed it.

After finishing 13 points behind Texas Sen. Dan Patrick in the Republican primary, incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst told Republican women in Arlington on Thursday he may need to introduce himself to voters again, even though he’s held statewide office for 15 years.

Dan Patrick brought out some star power in Highland Park: Mike Huckabee. The former presidential candidate and Fox News host focused on Patrick’s surprising lead in the March 4 primary.

RedState Women

A new conservative Texas political action committee launched online this week. Named "RedState Women," the group wants to counter efforts by Wendy Davis to attract female voters.

Cari Christman is chief of staff for a Texas senator and executive director for the PAC. She said Democrat Gubernatorial Candidate Wendy Davis doesn’t speak for all Texas women.

As lieutenant governor candidates David Dewhurst and Dan Patrick head into a May 27 runoff election, both are standing behind comments they made last fall, even though a fact-checking group has decided some of what they said is false or misleading.

The top two finishers in the Republican race for lieutenant governor are taking a deep breath Wednesday before they come out swinging in round two.

As Texans decide primary races today, the name of the game in the GOP contest for lieutenant governor is coming in second and forcing the leading candidate into a runoff.

Oops.

Soon after a judge ruled that the Texas gay marriage ban was unconstitutional, State Sen. Dan Patrick, a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, sent out this message on Twitter:

MARRIAGE= ONE MAN & ONE MAN. Enough of these activist judges. FAVORITE if you agree. I know the silent majority out there is with us!

State Senator and Republican Lieutenant Governor candidate Dan Patrick may have taken a political hit this week, when a story broke accusing him of employing an undocumented worker in the 1980s.

The story was reported by The Dallas Morning News and KTRK Houston ABC, but the two got wind of the story when another Lt. Governor candidate, Jerry Patterson, gave them the information - which he hired a private decective to gather .

It's called opposition research. And it's an age-old political tactic that often provides ammunition to candidates trying to gain the upper-hand against an opponent.

His mother may not like to hear this, but Jason Stanford is an opposition researcher.

"Oh God, yes, my mom tells people I'm a used car dealer," Stanford jokes.

Earlier this week, the Republicans running for lieutenant governor participated in the Texas Debates at KERA -- and they agreed on at least one thing:

All four said a judge was wrong when he ordered John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth to honor the wishes of a family and disconnect the ventilator of a brain-dead woman who was pregnant.

But, in an earlier debate, candidate Jerry Patterson said end-of-life decisions should be made by the family.

The four Republicans running for Texas lieutenant governor say the judge got it wrong by allowing a brain-dead, pregnant woman in Fort Worth to be removed from life support. It seems that last night’s live KERA debate was a race to the far right for the candidates.

Tonight at 8, the four Republicans running for lieutenant governor will meet at KERA studios in a debate being televised statewide.

With primary competition in the governor’s race, and Gov. Rick Perry not running for reelection, the lieutenant governor’s contest is taking on added importance in the March 4 primary.

Four seasoned, elected officials are duking it out to become the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor. Todd Staples accepted KERA’s invitation to sit down, talk about policy, and explain why he’s the best candidate for the job.

On Thursday Houston Mayor Annise Parker married her long-time partner Kathy Hubbard in Palm Springs, California. State Sen. Dan Patrick, a Houston Republican running for lieutenant governor responded with a press release stating: "This is obviously part of a larger strategy of hers to turn Texas into California."

Jerry Patterson Campaign

This week’s fundraising reports show at least three of the Republicans running for lieutenant governor have the money to compete on TV.  The fourth, Jerry Patterson, has a lot less cash, but unveiled an effort to target Hispanic voters.

With less than eight weeks to go until the primary election, the four Republicans running for lieutenant governor continue to mix it up over an issue that always riles Texas voters.

Democrat Wendy Davis may be a candidate for governor, but Tuesday night in Dallas she became a central part of a debate among Republicans running for lieutenant governor.

During the State Board of Education meeting this week, Texas Education Agency's attorney David Anderson said there's nothing on the books to prevent school districts from using the CSCOPE curriculum. CSCOPE came under fire earlier this year and in May, Republican Sen. Dan Patrick said Texas school districts would no longer use its lesson plans.

The battle lines are already being drawn over proposed legislation that would help low-income Texas students pay for private schooling. Some opponents to the plan announced Wednesday by Republican leaders in the Texas Senate said it was just another version of vouchers, which previous legislatures have rejected.

Texas Senate leaders today announced efforts to assist public school children who want to attend private schools.
