Dallas County District Attorney Susan Hawk says she got help to stop taking a prescription drug more than a year-and-a-half ago.

In 13 days, Dallas County gets a new district attorney. Susan Hawk will be the first woman in the job, and she won it last month from the first African-American D.A., Craig Watkins. She’s also the only Dallas Republican to win countywide this election year. She sat down to talk about some of her plans as the next district attorney.

The month after an election is generally thought to be a political ‘quiet time.’ This year, the past few weeks in North Texas has been pretty noisy. First, Fort Worth mayor Betsy Price announced her re-election bid on KERA, and this week, the mayor of Dallas said he’ll run again. Republican Susan Hawk upset two-term Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins Tuesday in one of the closest races of the night. Hawk declared victory just after 11 p.m. as she led Watkins by a few thousand votes.

On the campaign trail for Dallas County district attorney, the candidates have spent as much time attacking each other as they have debating policy.

Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins says he’s considering whether to prosecute the Liberian man who brought the Ebola virus to Dallas.

Dallas County is set to exonerate another North Texan.

What makes this case different is that Michael Phillips didn’t request DNA testing or actively proclaim his innocence. That’s a first for Dallas County – or anywhere in the country, according to the Dallas County District Attorney’s office and the National Registry of Exonerations.

To mark Black History month, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center has opened a new museum inside its main building in southern Dallas.

Children in the community center’s Head Start program kicked off the event with a song from the civil rights movement:

“Come on over to the front of the bus ... I’ll be riding up there!”

Contempt charges against Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins have been thrown out by visiting judge Robert Brotherton.  

Brotherton ruled the prosecutorial misconduct hearing at which Watkins refused to answer questions was improper, and was an attempt by attorneys for Al Hill III to find evidence of misconduct instead of presenting required evidence.

Judge Lena Levario will not have to recuse herself in the contempt case involving Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins.

Administrative Judge John Ovard ruled Monday that the burden of proof had not been met to remove Levario after allegations were made that she  was biased against Watkins.

The contempt hearing for Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins is on hold after an attorney from the D.A.’s office asked Judge Lena Levario to take herself off the case. Attorneys for Watkins say she’s biased, and found a county jail worker who said Levario made anti-Watkins comments to her over lunch a few months ago.

Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins is scheduled to be in court this morning on a four month-old contempt charge. That’s when the D.A. refused to talk about a fraud case despite the judge’s order to do so.

Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins could face jail time and a fine for contempt of court. Judge Lena Levario found Watkins in contempt after he refused to answer questions in a mortgage fraud case, and later dismissed the charges.

Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins showed up for his court-ordered appearance this morning only to have the judge slap him with a contempt of court order for refusing to answer questions.

Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins is expected in court Thursday morning for a hearing on alleged prosecutorial misconduct. He was subpoenaed to appear last month, but defied the order saying he was in his office, but too ill to appear. That was just the latest in a string of controversies for Watkins, who has been a lightning rod from the start.
