Tornadoes raked the Dallas area Tuesday, crumbling a wing of a nursing home, peeling roofs from dozens of homes and spiraling big-rig trailers into the air like footballs. More than a dozen injuries were reported.

Overturned cars left streets unnavigable and flattened trucks clogged highway shoulders. Preliminary estimates were that six to 12 twisters had touched down in North Texas, senior National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Martello said. But firm numbers would only come after survey teams checked damage Wednesday, he said.

The city of Dallas says it will find ways to make boat ramps more visible at Elgin Robertson Park as soon as possible. Early Saturday morning, two women, lost and looking for an I-30 access road, turned onto a boat ramp, drove into Lake Ray Hubbard, and were rescued moments before their car sank.

Delta and Fort Worth-based TPG Capital are reportedly making separate bids for American Airlines' parent AMR Corporation.

American Airlines' parent company, now in bankruptcy protection, says its stock will be dropped from the New York Stock Exchange.

American Eagle, the regional airline affiliate of American Airlines, may furlough more than 220 Texas-based pilots and flight attendants in February to cut costs under bankruptcy protection.

American Eagle vice-president Cathy McCann told the Texas Workforce Commission that 119 pilots and 104 flight attendants in the Dallas-Fort Worth area could lose their jobs around Feb. 13th.

Fort Worth-based American has about 74,000 employees, and Eagle has about 14,000, including part-timers. Parent company AMR Corp. filed for Chapter 11 protection Nov. 29th.

The North Texas economy will take a hit from AMR's bankruptcy, even if it's not evident yet. That's according to Southern Methodist University business experts. KERA's Bill Zeeble has more on the school's annual economic review.

When American Airlines filed for bankruptcy November 29th, it told customers to expect business as usual. But economist Michael Davis, with SMU's Cox School of Business, says that cannot last long. The carrier will have to cut costs, even if most local workers keep their jobs.
