The man who police say killed nearly 60 people and injured hundreds more at a country music festival in Las Vegas Sunday night once lived in North Texas.

Mesquite police say 64-year-old Stephen Paddock lived in the Dallas suburb from 2004 to 2012.

Dallas County property records show Paddock owned a home on Clear Lake Lane from 2004 to 2009. The home was then transferred to his mother until 2014.

KERA's Stella Chavez was in Mesquite Monday morning and tracked down some of Paddock's neighbors. They say they only saw him a handful of times — and that he was quiet and kept to himself.

George Huertas says he occasionally talked with Paddock’s mom; he says she was friendly. He only saw Paddock when he was visiting his mom. After Paddock’s mom moved to Florida, she sent Huertas oranges. He hasn’t stayed in touch with her.

Maria Almeida, who also lives on Clear Lake Lane, says she and her husband can’t believe the news.

“They just looked like normal people," Almeida told KERA. "They didn’t talk. She was very quiet. We were neighbors for years and all she would do is just come out and get her mail and she would wave and say hi."

The Dallas Morning News reports Paddock once managed an apartment complex in Mesquite.

Mesquite police say Paddock owned a few rental properties. Police say there's no indication they had contact with him.

NPR reports that Paddock had addresses in Texas, California, Florida and Nevada. He settled last in another Mesquite — Mesquite, Nevada, about 90 minutes from Las Vegas.

Brother in disbelief

The brother of Stephen Paddock said he's "completely dumbfounded" by the shooting, the deadliest in modern U.S. history. Eric Paddock told the Orlando Sentinel that he can't understand what happened.

Eric Paddock said his brother was a multimillionaire who made much of his money in real estate.

While Paddock appeared to have no criminal history, his father was a notorious bank robber, Eric Paddock confirmed to the Sentinel. Benjamin Hoskins Paddock tried to run down an FBI agent with his car in Las Vegas in 1960 and wound up on the agency's most wanted list after escaping from a federal prison in Texas in 1968, when Stephen Paddock was a teen.

Acted alone

Stephen Paddock had no connection to an international terrorist group, the FBI said Monday. The announcement from Aaron Rouse, special agent in charge in Las Vegas, comes after the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack without providing evidence.

Nevada authorities say they believe Paddock acted alone and no motive was yet known.

Police believe Paddock died by suicide after shooting at music festival attendees from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
