Top Stories: Tackling Affordable Housing In Dallas; Kids Get Down With Vocab

The top local stories this afternoon from KERA News: Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings says he wants a long-term housing solution for the city’s homeless. On Monday, he announced he is forming a new group to study the issue: the Dallas Commission on Homelessness.

Vocabulary is a tough sell for school kids, so a program called “Word Masters” tries to make it fun by challenging students across the country to compete with tricky analogy tests.

This school year, about 22,000 4th graders took the first test. Fifty kids got a perfect score, and 10 of them go to St. Mark’s in Dallas.

  • Dallas’ homeless population has been growing, meanwhile, the North Texas economy is booming. Businesses are relocating to the region and construction cranes are busy building developments. Reverend Gerald Britt works with the nonprofit CitySquare, and talks about where this growth leaves people who are barely making ends meet.
