The top local stories this evening from KERA News:

All across the country Wednesday, thousands of students walked out of class protest gun laws in the wake of the Parkland high school shootings in Florida. In North Texas and most parts statewide, kids are on Spring Break, so there's no class to walk out of.

Today on the Takeaway, Parker Butler a senior at Liberty High School in Frisco, spoke about why protesting is important to him.

The Trump administration recently announced it will launch a commission to explore ways to strengthen school security in the aftermath of shooting deaths at a Florida high school. In Austin, KUT’s Claire McInerny reports on what Texas already does in terms of school safety, and what lawmakers want going forward.

Other stories this evening:

  • A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit Tuesday against the Irving school district and the city. As KERA’s Stephanie Kuo reports, it was filed by the father of Ahmed Mohamed, the teenager whose homemade clock was mistaken for a bomb.

  • Some of the most far out ideas in technology are being discussed this week at South by Southwest's Interactive Conference. KERA's Christy Robinson has been reporting from Austin, and she sat down with Art&Seek's Anne Bothwell to talk about what the future might hold.

You can listen to North Texas stories weekdays at 8:22 a.m. and 6:20 p.m. on KERA 90.1 FM.
