Top Stories: Mumps Outbreak In Johnson County Rivals Statewide Totals Since 2011

U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
The mumps virus is the pathogen responsible for causing mumps in human beings, with an average incubation period of 16 to 18 days, and ranging between 12 to 25 days.

The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

State health officials have identified 28 cases of mumps in Johnson County. Texas hasn’t had more than 20 cases of the virus since 2011.

Most of the cases are in school-age children in Cleburne and Keene. The Cleburne and Keene school districts have begun identifying students who may have come in contact with the virus.

Dr. Elvin Adams with the Department of State Health Services told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram the virus is believed to have come from an outbreak in Arkansas.

Other stories this morning:

  • A white nationalist is scheduled to speak tonight on the Texas A&M University campus. Dallas native Richard Spencer came into the spotlight when he shouted “Hail Trump” and “Hail victory” to Nazi salutes during a recent speech in Washington, D.C. The university will hold an overlapping event.
  • We catch up with Duncanville Superintendent Marc Smith, who’s finishing up his first year running the school district.
