If you disobeyed “No Trespassing” signs in the world’s greatest cities, what would you find? Urban planner and explorer Moses Gates broke rules from Paris to Moscow to discover the undersides of well-charted places. He talks to Think host Krys Boyd today at noon about the journeys behind Hidden Cities: Travels to the Secret Corners of the World's Great Metropolises; A Memoir of Urban Exploration.
Gates led satellite radio personality Opie through an Amtrak tunnel deep underneath Riverside Park in Manhattan to find an incredible stretch of art on the walls. Dali-esque murals and graffiti painting the history of so-called Mole People (chronicled in the documentary Dark Days) who were evicted from the tunnel remain, reaching a scarce few brave enough to climb underground.
Listen to Think from noon to 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday, on KERA 90.1. You can stream the show at kera.org.
