Dallas, TX – Hundreds of students across Texas still need to "get their shots." KERA's BJ Austin says the deadline for additional, required immunizations was Thursday.

School districts were instructed to send students home if their shot records were incomplete. The Fort Worth School District started the day with 2500 students on that list. The situation was much better in Carrollton-Farmers Branch: only 73 out of 26,000 students without the shots - according to the School District's Angela Shelley.

Shelley: We really appreciate our healthcare providers, like CareVan, that help us provide low cost, or no cost, immunizations to our families.

The Dallas School District says 4800 elementary school students do not have the required immunizations. Officials say they sent parents letters about this last May, and over the summer. And during the past six weeks, three letters and a phone call. Frisco and Garland each report about 200 students without the immunizations. Students must get the shots before returning to class.
