The top local stories this morning from the KERA Newsroom: Saturday’s tornado count has climbed to 12. The National Weather Service says the two additional tornadoes were both EF-0s that touched down in Hillsboro and Maypearl.
“Sometimes these tornadoes will lift off the ground and then come back on the ground,” meteorologist Ted Ryan said. “Either a new one will form or the same one will come back down on the ground. When they don’t have a continuous path they count as separate tornadoes. So even though the same storm produced four or five tornadoes, every time it lifted off the ground for any length of time, it counts as a new tornado.”
The weather service had originally confirmed nine tornadoes. A tenth was confirmed in Farmersville. Ryan says the meteorologists are wrapping up their investigation, but can’t rule out whether more tornadoes will be confirmed in the coming days.
