Massieu Loses Accreditation

Dallas, TX – Arlington's Jean Massieu Academy charter school has lost its accreditation from the Texas Education Agency. KERA's Bill Zeeble has more.

Wednesday's announcement means the school will close this summer unless Massieu officials successfully appeal.

The school serves mostly deaf and hearing-impaired students. It failed repeatedly to meet financial or academic standards set by the state.

Massieu is one of only 3 charter schools to ever have its Texas accreditation revoked. School officials could not be reached for comment.

Two other local charters - Northwest Preparatory in Fort Worth, and Metro Academy of Math and Science in Arlington, are on probation after 3 straight years of poor ratings. They could lose their charter next year if nothing improves. Of more than 1200 school districts and charter schools in Texas, most - 97 percent - were accredited.
