Habitat Homes Among Those Lost In Granbury

Habitat For Humanity, Hood County

Five stories that have North Texas talking: introducing the Dallas Maritime Museum (?), an ideal weekend in the Hill Country, word nerd paradise and more.

Governor Rick Perry plans to visit Granbury today to survey damage from Wednesday’s tornadoes. The leveled homes include ones built by Habitat for Humanity, which focused its efforts on the low-income Rancho Brazos Estates subdivision for years.

Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds said as of Thursday afternoon, six or seven people had not been accounted for. Six people – four men and two women – died in the storms. [AP via NPR]

  • Oh Boy, Mates. Dallas Is Getting A Maritime Museum?: An $80 million museum at the banks of the Trinity will center on – what else? –a nuclear-powered attack submarine. The Dallas Maritime Museum would become the only place such a vessel could be seen out of water, if the acquisition is made. [Dallas News]

  • Running Up That Hill, For Cheap: “Dallas may not be a world-class city, but it’s pulling out all the stops to get there.” Yep- the New York Times’ 36 Hours series might not have done Dallas justice with some pretty backhanded compliments when the city’s turn came up in 2009. But the Texas Hill Country edition looks delicious – and it’s well-timed for North Texans headed into summer without the means or time for a weeklong getaway. Turns out you can try a hand at German nine pin bowling while eating coconut meringue pie at $2.95 a slice at a place called Strike Nine, find a four-course menu for $45 a person at the Top of the Hill mansion and get a CD (charming!) with narration to direct you around LBJ Ranch at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park when you drive around the spot. Check out the ready-made weekend.

  • ‘Office’ Finale Spoiler: Another thing you can now find in the Austin area – at least in the realm of awkward fiction: Jim and Pam’s happy ending. According to last night’s final episode of The Office, the couple chose to move to Austin over Philadelphia at the close of the series. [Reuters]

  •  Word Nerd Weekend:  Before their sold-out appearance at the Lakewood Theater last night, Grant Barrett and Martha Barnette, hosts of “A Way With Words,” sat down in the studio with Think host Krys Boyd. For a peek inside the show’s operation and the passion of these relentless language scholars, check out the podcast. (And yes, they tried to guess more than one caller's accent.)
