The Dallas ISD school board must pick the 15-member home-rule charter commission by June 23.

Four Dallas ISD teachers have been chosen to help write the home-rule school charter. Of the 15 commission members, four must be teachers.

The four teachers are: Isaac Freeman, Thomas C. Marsh Middle School; Ron Oliver, James Bowie Elementary School; Bonita Reec, Birdie Alexander Elementary School; Julie Sandel, Hillcrest High School.

If any of these teachers can’t or won’t serve, alternatives are Mark Harrington, Seagoville High School, and Candace McAfee, Skyline High School.

District Advisory Committee members reviewed 75 applications and narrowed them down to 14 finalists. They picked the six to ensure racial, ethnic, gender, campus and grade-level diversity.

Eleven more commission members must be chosen, including eight DISD parents.

The home-rule charter could remake how the Dallas ISD operates. Because backers of the home-rule effort turned in enough signatures, trustees must name a commission by June 23.
