Five stories that have North Texas talking: Darth Vader as Fort Worth police officer?; a proposal to secede from the U.S. has been voted down; Leon Bridges appears on "SNL;" and more.
Darth Vader recently interviewed for a job in the Fort Worth Police Department! And this video proves it! OK, kind of. The department produced a recruitment video featuring a job interview with the "Star Wars" character. (May the Fort Worth Force be with you.) ABC News reports: “Sgt. Steve Enright, who questions the Sith Lord in the three-minute clip, told ABC News the department enjoys trying ‘timely’ hiring tactics to scope out fresh faces. ‘It's a lighter way of approaching people for possibly starting a career in law enforcement,’ Enright said. ‘We are humanizing the position. We want to show that we're just as normal as everyone on the street and we enjoy a good joke.’”
Watch it right here:
- Texas Republicans have voted down a proposal to secede from the country. The Texas Tribune reports: “In a voice vote Saturday afternoon, the State Republican Executive Committee rejected a measure that would have put the issue on the March 1 primary ballot. The ballot language would have been non-binding, amounting to a formal survey of voters on whether they would like to see Texas declare its independence from the United States. While the proposal's defeat was expected, the measure had sparked some heated debate on the 60-member executive committee, the governing body of the Republican Party of Texas. Seeking to avoid a protracted fight, the executive committee voted earlier Saturday afternoon to cap discussion of the issue at 30 minutes then put it to an up-or-down vote.” [Texas Tribune]
- There was a massive accident in Arlington Sunday. WFAA-TV reports: “Four cars were towed away from the scene of a messy seven-vehicle accident on Interstate 20 in Arlington Sunday afternoon. One SUV came to a rest on two wheels, propped up on another vehicle that appeared to have rear-ended the SUV. Miraculously, no one was injured.” Arlington police told WFAA that at least one driver was driving too closely and that might have caused the crash. [WFAA-TV]
- A California man faces drug possession charges after a trooper searched his vehicle in Conway in northwestern Texas and found $120,000 worth of marijuana, including some neatly wrapped in holiday gift boxes. The Texas Department of Public Safety said that a trooper stopped a pickup truck last week night near Conway, about 25 miles northeast of Amarillo, and found more than 20 pounds of pot in the gift boxes and hidden in a spare tire. Amarillo is about 370 miles northwest of Dallas. The trooper arrested the driver, 50-year-old Frank Coronado of Turlock, California. The department suspects Coronado was trafficking drugs from California to Oklahoma City and charged him with felony possession of marijuana. Coronado was freed on $10,000 bond. Jail records don't list an attorney to speak on his behalf. [Associated Press]
