Acid Spill Closes Dallas Freeway & Nightly Roundup

By KERA News & Wire Services

Dallas, TX –

Officials in Dallas say the acid leak that has caused a massive rush-hour traffic jam isn't nearly as dangerous as first believed.

Officials had said the leak from an 18-wheeler Friday was from the 200 gallons of the toxic and highly corrosive chemical hydrofluoric acid. However, once hazmat crews found the source of the leak, it was from a container carrying hydrochloric acid.

Dallas Fire-Rescue Capt. Ted Padgett, the city's hazmat program manager, says there were 200 gallons of the more dangerous acid onboard, but none of those containers were leaking.

Padgett says both acids look like water.

Hydrochloric acid has a variety of uses, including cleaning products. Hydrofluoric acid can eat skin all the way to the bone.

Stolen Tailgates In Irving

Irving Police are warning about a new crime trend: stolen tailgates.

Police say they've received more than thirty reports of tailgates stolen from pickups over the past several weeks. Most of the thefts have occurred in the area south of Highway 183, between Macarthur and Story road. And most of the trucks have been Fords.

Detectives say pickup owners should use the factory installed lock, or get a lock for their tailgates.

Reprieve For Landmark Oak Cliff Church

A Dallas Judge has given the old Oak Cliff Christian Church a reprieve from the wrecking ball.

The Dallas School District wants to tear down the landmark building it now owns on East Tenth Street to build tennis courts. They would be part of the "new" Adamson High School campus.

Judge Martin Hoffman today rejected the DISD's request to dismiss a lawsuit by the Old Oak Cliff Conservation League, and ordered the two sides into mediation.

Conservation League members want the building restored and used for school purposes, such as a performance hall or library. They say it's a part of Oak Cliff history and should be preserved.

The next court hearing is February 19th.
