Authorities say 12 elementary students were slightly hurt when their school bus overturned on a highway between Waxahachie and Boyce as the driver became distracted.
The Waxahachie Independent School District bus ended up on its side shorty before 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Twenty children and the driver were on board during the wreck midway between Waxahachie and Boyce in Ellis County, Waxahachie ISD officials said.
Twelve children have injuries not believed to be life-threatening and were transported to hospitals to be checked, said James Colunga, a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety. The driver wasn't hurt.
Colunga says the driver was monitoring the children and became distracted. The bus wheels left the road and the vehicle overturned during the morning route.
School district officials did not immediately identify the driver.
Waxahachie is about 25 miles south of Dallas.
Jeremy Glenn, Waxahachie ISD superintendent, said in a statement: “I want to applaud the emergency crews for their quick action to help our students and families. The Waxahachie Police, Fire Department, and EMS Services are to be commended on their rapid response time and assistance to the school district. I am grateful for their dedication to our district, students, and community. The safety and security of our students will always be our number one priority.”
