FW's North Side council candidates prepare for face-off

Dallas, TX – Suzanne Sprague, Reporter: The image most visitors to Fort Worth, and indeed many of its own residents, have of the city's North Side - is the Stockyards. Country music lilts over loudspeakers as modern-day wranglers pose for tourists. But the surrounding neighborhoods make a quiet contrast. They are mostly moderate to low-income areas with an aging homes. And their families are often first-generation Americans, which Councilman Jim Lane says is the district's strongest link.

Texas House passes general appropriations bill

Austin, TX – A whoop went up from the House floor at 10 p.m. Wednesday as it was announced that the last of several dozen remaining amendments to HB 1 had been withdrawn. The three days of wrangling over the House version of the state's budget bill had at long last ended.

Texas House begins debating, amending HB1

Austin, TX – "Right now this bill is not good enough for Texas," said Rep. Garnet Coleman (D-Houston) of HB 1 after members of the House Appropriations Committee and Appropriations subcommittees laid out the general appropriations bill before the full House Monday evening.

With 484 amendments to the bill pre-filed by last Saturday's deadline, Coleman began the late Monday evening and early Tuesday morning process by bringing up the first amendment.
