Feds Appealing Decision On Protections For Transgender Students

The Obama administration on Thursday filed notice that it will appeal a Texas federal judge's ruling that temporarily blocked new federal guidelines directing public schools to accommodate transgender students, including allowing them to use bathrooms that align with their gender identity.

Southern Methodist University has agreed to provide a safer environment for students who allege sexual assault or other gender-based violence.

Southern Methodist University is one of 55 colleges nationwide under federal investigation for possible violations over handling sexual violence and harassment complaints. It's one of two institutions listed in Texas.
