National tea party organizers say tomorrow’s U.S. Senate race between Ted Cruz and David Dewhurst is an important test. It will tell them whether the efforts of tea party activists can defeat established Republican candidates in a big, red state like Texas.

National tea party favorites took stage at a packed American Airlines arena in Dallas last night.  South Carolina Senator Jim Demint was among those who told a crowd of 15,000 that Tea Party conservatives across the country are poised to defeat incumbent Republicans again this year.

Early voting begins today for Texas runoff elections. Nowhere are the candidates campaigning harder and spending more money than in the Republican U.S. Senate race. On Saturday Ted Cruz headlined three Tea Party rallies beginning in Garland, where he fired up a crowd of about 100.

Former Dallas mayor Tom Leppert upstaged a televised debate between Republican senate candidates David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz Tuesday night when he appeared with Dewhurst and endorsed him. 

Former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert finished third in the Republican primary behind Dewhurst and Cruz, both of whom sought his support.

Leppert said his decision on who to endorse came down to the question of who could create jobs.  He said Dewhurst has proven he can do that by building a successful energy business. 

Less than three weeks before Election Day an independent poll shows Ted Cruz overtaking David Dewhurst in the Republican race for the U.S. Senate.  It comes in the midst of news that previous Dewhurst speeches have been removed from the Internet.

Republican voters will be asking questions when Senate candidates Ted Cruz and David Dewhurst meet tonight for their first one-on-one debate at KERA.

There’s one day left before Republican Senate candidates David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz face off in their first televised debate, live from KERA’s studios. 

The city of Dallas is reporting 10 mosquito pools testing positive for the West Nile Virus.

The latest is in Lake Highlands. Mosquito spraying trucks will be out Tuesday night in the neighborhood bounded by Royal, Skillman, Walnut Hill and Ferndale Road.

Michael Wheeler, with the city’s mosquito control team, is on the road testing for the virus. He says the infected insects are showing up very early this year.

“It’s about two months quicker than we usually get our positive results for West Nile virus,” said Wheeler.

Republican activists who booed U.S. Senate Candidate David Dewhurst earlier cheered loudly and waved a sea of Ted Cruz placards as Dewhurst’s opponent took the stage at the state GOP convention Saturday.

At the state Republican convention Friday supporters of U.S. Senate Candidate Ted Cruz walked out as his opponent David Dewhurst began to speak. It was the second day Cruz activists dissed Dewhurst in front of fellow Republicans.

Republican activism may have reached a new level Thursday when delegates at the state GOP convention in Fort Worth booed Governor Rick Perry. 

Both candidates in a run-off for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination accepted KERA's invitation to debate.

A travel association survey finds retail gasoline prices have tumbled 7 cents across Texas this week. AAA Texas on Thursday reported the average price at the pump fell to $3.61 per gallon.

Gas prices nationally also down 6 cents, reaching $3.74 per gallon. AAA Texas says crude oil prices have declined in the last week.

The group's weekly survey finds the most expensive gasoline statewide is in El Paso, at $3.73 per gallon. Amarillo has the cheapest gasoline, selling for an average $3.46 per gallon.

The national Tea Party Express held rallies in Texas the past three days drumming up support for a variety of Republican candidates. The Texas primary is May 29. The national Tea Party Express has endorsed Texas GOP candidate for U.S. Senate Ted Cruz.

Which Republican candidate running for U.S. Senate can be the alternative to perceived front-runner David Dewhurst? Dewhurst’s three main challengers all see themselves in that role as they vie for second place and an opportunity to face Dewhurst in a run-off race. KERA’s Shelley Kofler has more on how candidates tried to position themselves during last Friday’s televised debate.
