A North Texas jury has convicted a former public official of capital murder in a revenge plot against a local district attorney, his wife and a top assistant.

A former justice of the peace accused of killing a North Texas district attorney and his wife had a "treasure trove" of evidence in a storage shed, prosecutors said during opening statements Monday.

The wife of former Justice of the Peace Eric Williams has confessed to a plot to kill the Kaufman County district attorney, his wife and his chief assistant, authorities said Wednesday. And Kim Williams told them her husband was the shooter.

Update, Tuesday, 8:05 p.m.: Citing security concerns, a federal prosecutor in Houston has decided to remove himself from a large racketeering case involving the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas prison gang.

Fred Moss, a former assistant U.S. attorney, says the shootings of the Kaufman County district attorney, his wife and his top assistant have all the appearances of professional hits. Moss, who now teaches at Southern Methodist University, talked with KERA about how investigators would approach a case like this one.

Security is high this morning for both elected officials and employees of Kaufman County. That’s because the County’s District Attorney and his wife were shot to death in their home over the weekend.

Kaufman County authorities say the FBI and numerous other agencies have joined the murder investigation of prosecutor Mark Hasse.  

Authorities are looking for one or more suspects who gunned down Hasse Thursday morning as he walked from his car to the county courthouse.

The Texas Rangers, the Texas Department of Public Safety and neighboring county law enforcement are also assisting in the investigation and search for suspects.

Police say there’s an armed, uniformed officer this morning guarding the Kaufman County Courthouse parking lot. That’s because Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was gunned down there yesterday morning. The investigation and manhunt continues.
