The Future Of U.S. Infrastructure

Traffic is, of course, a huge drain of drivers' time. And it turns out it's also a drain on our wallets, as traffic costs American about $121 billion per year in wasted productivity and inefficient fuel usage. That's according to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.

At least some of the rush-hour madness can be attributed to poor infrastructure: potholes, crumbling highways, bridges on the verge of collapse.

National security experts have long warned that the United States’ infrastructure was vulnerable to hackers abroad. A few high profile cases have made headlines in recent years. In 2012 and 2013, Russian hackers were able to get into the U.S. public utilities and power generators to send and receive encrypted messages.

Tampa Steel Erecting Co.

Two giant arches that will eventually tower over the Trinity River are being built in Florida.

The arches are part of the new Margaret McDermott Bridge.

Tampa Steel Erecting Co. is in charge of the $40 million project. Vice President Jeffrey Ames tells The Tampa Tribune that all 80 of the company's current employees are working on the project.

LBJ TEXpress

Last Saturday, you could start going faster on part of the chronically congested LBJ Freeway in north Dallas. But it’s going to cost you.

The so-called “managed toll lanes” are part of the $2 billion LBJ Express project and promise speeds of at least 50 miles an hour. The first segment of the so-called TEXpress managed toll lanes on LBJ is the 3-mile stretch between Preston Road and Greenville Avenue.

About 100 Dallas workers are dropping sand and salt at this hour, to make roads passable. They’re members of the second 12-hour shift of the city’s Ice Force One road crew. Meet some members of the first shift, who worked midnight to noon Friday.
