Independence Day

Bill Zeeble / KERA News

It’s been just five days since hundreds of people protested the Trump administration’s immigration policies in the Denton town square. On July Fourth, the annual Yankee Doodle Parade marched past the same spot.

Look up into the night sky this July Fourth and you'll certainly see some fireworks, but what goes into making these colorful displays?

Amy Walker is a professor with the University of Texas at Dallas. She has her Ph.D. in chemistry, so she knows a thing or two about the science behind the boom.

From Texas Standard:

If you're a Texan trying to make it in the fireworks business, take some cues from the products themselves: You've got to get off the ground and blow up in short order.

There’s a rare piece of American history tucked into the Dallas Public Library -- an original print of the Declaration of Independence. It's the only copy on display west of the Mississippi River.

Lakewood’s Fourth of July parade is a tradition that’s nearly 50 years old. While the East Dallas neighborhood is still working to repair major hail damage from the June 13th storms, residents took Independence Day off.

Fourth of July Fireworks are on tap tonight in Dallas, at Fair Park in the Cotton Bowl, and in Fort Worth at the Botanic Garden.
