One way to help keep thousands of freed drug felons from returning to Texas prisons is letting them collect food stamps while getting back on their feet, advocates say. And starting Sept. 1, many will be able to do just that.

Starting Friday, SNAP, or food stamp benefits, will be cut by 5 percent. That’s $36 a month for a family of four. Food bank operators in North Texas are bracing for more people lining up at local pantries.
