The Dallas Shootings: A Look Back

Officers scramble to track the gunman who killed five cops and injured 11 other people on July 7 in downtown Dallas

On July 7, a peaceful protest was ending in downtown Dallas. It was a rally like many across the country --sparked by the deaths of black men shot by police in Baton Rouge, Minnesota and other cities. Then, suddenly, the atmosphere changed. A gunman opened fire. Five officers were killed. Nine others, and two civilians, were injured.

By all accounts, Thursday night's protest in downtown Dallas was peaceful. Then shots rang out.

Police have identified the shooter as Micah Xavier Johnson, a 25-year-old Army veteran who lived in Mesquite. On Friday, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said Johnson was upset about recent police shootings. KERA visited Johnson’s neighborhood and spoke to neighbors there.

The top stories this afternoon from KERA news: Gunfire following a Thursday night protest in downtown Dallas killed five police officers and wounded seven others, as well as two civilians. KERA now knows more about victims and the suspect who was killed, Micah Xavier Johnson.

Soon after the Thursday night shooting, the first death was confirmed. Overnight, the death toll climbed. By early Friday morning, five officers were dead. At a press conference, Dallas Police Chief David Brown expressed his disbelief.
