Highland Park High School and the Dallas school district’s Townview Magnet Center are again among the best public schools in North Texas. That’s according to the education nonprofit Children At Risk, which has rated some 1,600 schools across Dallas-Fort Worth.

School starts next week for most Texas students. But for more than 60 Dallas child advocacy experts, the homework has already begun. They met this week for a look at a Texas Legislature report card on children’s issues, and to outline assignments for the next legislative session.

Human trafficking refers to people who are forced into labor or sexual exploitation. And the issue hits close to home.

The Interstate 10 corridor through Houston is the No. 1 trafficking route in the U.S. Some of the business reaches deep into North Texas. The public policy advocacy group Children at Risk recently led a tour of the seedier side of Dallas that’s the heart of the trafficking trade.

Most public high schools in Dallas aren’t measuring up, according to the latest Texas School Guide from Children At Risk. Every public school is rated in the guide from the non-profit that does education research.

Early education is a hot topic these days and it’s about to get hotter. Texas lawmakers cut some pre-Kindergarten funding in 2011. A paper out Tuesday examines how that’s affected school districts. Some of them valued pre-Kindergarten so much they sacrificed other programs to keep it.

The Texas nonprofit Children At Risk ranked the state’s top schools, and in North Texas, four of the top five high schools are in the Dallas Independent School District. Most are magnet schools.
