Five years ago, the Dallas Independent School District opened its first drop-in center for students at North Dallas High School. The campus sits near homeless shelters and pricey apartments, and has one of the largest homeless high school populations in the city.

Since then, high school drop-in centers have multiplied across the school district to 20.

Recent pep rallies at elementary schools across Dallas have included a little gift for every kid in attendance -- a T-shirt with the name of their local high school and the year they’ll graduate.

The Dallas Independent School District was recently commended by the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Youth Sports Safety Alliance for putting athletic trainers at all 23 of its high schools over the last two years.

Girls’ basketball teams from high schools across Texas are on their way to the state championships in San Antonio. Bryan Adams High School in Dallas earned a spot in the Final Four this year.

High school seniors are told early and often to fill out a free application for federal student aid— typically called a FAFSA – to help them pay for college. The problem is that filling out the FAFSA requires tax returns, Social Security numbers for parents, and other data that students generally don’t have at their fingertips.
