Update, 7:45 a.m. Tuesday: Twelve minor injuries were reported when the front landing gear on the Southwest jet collapsed, the Dallas Morning News reports. The paper said six passengers and six crew members were taken to a hospital near LaGuardia Airport.

Update, 5:50 p.m. : Tuesday's computer glitch grounded American Airlines for several hours and put the plans of thousands of stranded travelers on hold. KERA's Bill Zeeble talked to a few of them ​at DFW Airport's terminal C.

Critics of the proposed American Airlines/U.S.  Airways merger fear the deal will hurt competition and lead to higher fares. Airline representatives say those fears are unfounded. The two sides faced off during a U.S. House subcommittee meeting on Tuesday.

Statements confirming the news that directors of US Airways and American Airlines have agreed to merge the airlines have now been released by both companies.

American says:

Bloomberg News is reporting what KERA and other news organizations have been hearing in speculative terms, which is that American Airlines and U.S. Airways have agreed to a merger.

By an overwhelming 74 percent margin, American Airlines pilots have voted to ratify the tentative contract hammered out with the bankrupt carrier. Voting ended Friday at noon.

American Airlines says it’s serious about taking pilots to court if, as the company claims, they continue to disrupt flights. And if that happens, the pilots union could be fined millions.
