Former FBI Director James Comey testified Thursday before the Senate intelligence committee as part of its ongoing investigation into Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
Comey, who was leading the FBI investigation into Russia's role in the election, was fired by President Trump on May 9. The timing of the president's decision drew criticism.
In his opening statement released Wednesday, Comey "effectively confirms many of the bombshell reports from the New York Times and the Washington Post over the past month that have raised the question of whether the president tried to interfere in the ongoing investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and whether or not Trump campaign associates colluded with the country," NPR reports.
Intelligence officials, including Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and the head of the National Security Agency, Adm. Mike Rogers, testified before the same committee Wednesday.
Trump reportedly asked them both to state publicly that there was no collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. Neither official has done so.
