Top Stories: What’s Next For Ted Cruz; Health Care On The Go

Texas Tribune

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Now that he’s out of the race for the GOP presidential nomination, many wonder what’s next for Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick chaired the Cruz campaign in Texas. He told WFAA-TV he hopes Donald Trump carves out a role for Cruz if the billionaire goes on to win the presidency – specifically, a nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Cruz hasn’t said if he’ll endorse Trump, or what his next steps will be. However, he vowed last night to continue fighting for religious liberty and other causes important to him.

Just last week, the Senator named Carly Fiorina as his running mate, and hatched a plan with Ohio Governor John Kasich to campaign in specific states.

Cruz was the first Republican to enter the race more than a year ago.

Other stories this morning:

  • The Texas Public Utility Commission meets this morning to discuss the Dallas-based Hunt Group’s attempt to buy Oncor. Hunt representatives will ask the PUC for a chance to work out some of the more contentious issues in its plan. One issue involves $250 million dollars in tax breaks under the Hunt plan. Some PUC members think some of the money should go to taxpayers.
  • The eviction of Tent City raises several questions about the fate of the homeless who camped there. One concern: access to health care. That’s where mobile health clinics come in.
