Top Stories: Support For Border Wall Scant Among Congressional Texans

Creative Commons

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Few Texans in Congress support building a wall across the U.S./Mexico border. According to a survey by the Texas Tribune, none of the 38 members of the Texas delegation offered full support of a complete border wall.

Instead, they called for new policies, such as fencing and walls in some places, and beefing up security with increased surveillance or more federal agents.

That’s at odds with many of President-elect Donald Trump’s supporters. According to a Pew Research poll in August, 79 percent were in favor of building a wall across the U.S.-Mexico border.

The border wall has been a major cornerstone of Trump’s foreign policy. For now, fences cover about 700 miles of the two-thousand mile-long border.

Other stories this morning:

  • Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and other civic leaders today will announce $10 million has been raised to benefit officers and families affected by the July shootings in downtown Dallas. Yesterday, families of the five officers killed learned they were getting help with housing expenses.
  • Some Dallas schools this year have received a washer and dryer. Though it sounds unusual, school leaders say students are showing up in dirty clothes.
  • After Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott famously dove into a Salvation Army red kettle Sunday, the charity will get a big donation from the player.
