Top Stories: Some Worry New Transgender Guidelines In Fort Worth Are A Step Back

Transgender teen Benjamin Juan, a recent graduate of Arlington Heights High School, has been supportive of the district’s original transgender guidelines.";

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: The Fort Worth school district yesterday released an updated version of safety guidelines for transgender students.

The changes come after months of uproar. Under the original guidelines, transgender kids who asked for accommodations didn’t have to worry about school officials outing them to their parents. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said that violated state law.

The new version builds in more parental involvement, and evaluates each person’s situation on a case-by-case basis. However, some LGBT activists worry the changes will be detrimental to transgender students who don’t have supportive parents.
