Top Stories: Severe Storms Cause At Least 1 Tornado, NWS Working To Confirm More

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: The National Weather Service has confirmed at least one tornado touched down in Clifton, northwest of Waco. No injuries were reported.

The agency’s also working to confirm possible tornadoes in Mansfield, Alvord and Grand Prairie. An airplane hangar was damaged from strong winds at Grand Prairie Municipal Airport.

About 33,000 customers were without power during the height of the storm.

A powerful storm system unleashed strong winds and torrential rains across much of Texas Sunday night, knocking out power, damaging homes and flooding streets.

 

A tornado warning after Green Bay's victory over Dallas in an NFC divisional playoff kept some fans and players inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington for more than hour after the game.

 

Fire officials in Frisco say more than 30 homes were damaged by high winds.

 

Meanwhile, hail fell in the Hill Country west of Austin.

 

The severe weather Sunday evening also affected flights in and out of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

  • Celebrations for Martin Luther King Day begin this morning throughout North Texas. The annual MLK Parade in Dallas starts at 10 a.m. at Holmes Street, and will end at Fair Park. Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson will serve as Grand Marshal. Fort Worth’s parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Ninth and Commerce Street. It’ll end with a rally at Sundance Square Plaza.
  • Eight elementary students from the Dallas school district competed Friday at the annual Gardere Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition. Fifth-grader Sierra Jones took first place.
  • You may remember hearing about chlorophyllfrom biology class. It helps plants convert sunlight to energy, but it’s now a popular food supplement and additive.
