Top Stories: Rockwall City Council To Debate Proposed Restroom Ordinance

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: The Rockwall city council tonight will debate a proposed public restroom ordinance.

It would require people to use the bathroom that corresponds to their sex at birth, not the sex which they identify with as an adult. Those who violate the law would face a fine of up to $500.

A similar controversial law passed in North Carolina. Rockwall Mayor Jim Pruitt, who proposed the ordinance, told CBS 11 it’s designed to prevent child predators from entering restrooms, not to single out members of the transgender community.

The city council meeting begins tonight at 6.

Other stories this morning:

  • An important deadline in a proposed sale of Oncor passed over the weekend. The Dallas Morning News reports the Dallas-based Hunt group did not put up $50 million required by Saturday to keep its plan to buy Oncor as the exclusive deal moving forward. The sale’s part of a plan to get Energy Future Holdings out of bankruptcy, and that company’s debtors yesterday filed a new plan with a bankruptcy court in Delaware.
  • Voice strain is not just limited to singers. Speaking too long or too loud can cause hoarseness or worse if you don’t use your larynx correctly. We’ll have some tips (and the correct way to whisper) in this edition of Vital Signs.
