A couple of hundred supporters stand holding lit candles as they listen to comments from speakers during a vigil for Jordan Edwards in Balch Springs May 4.

The top local stories from KERA News: A press conference scheduled later this morning will announce a rally for Jordan Edwards, the teenager shot and killed by a police officer in Balch Springs last weekend.

Next Generation Action Network plans to host the rally tomorrow night outside the Frank Crowley Courts Building in Dallas. It follows a funeral for Edwards held Saturday.

The unarmed teenager and his friends were leaving a house party when former officer Roy Oliver fired at their vehicle. Edwards was a passenger.

His family has filed a federal lawsuit against Oliver and the Balch Springs Police Department. Oliver was fired last week, and later arrested on a murder charge. He’s since been released on 300-thousand dollars bond.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and the district attorney’s office are investigating the case.

Other stories this morning:

  • Several municipal races across North Texas will head to a runoff next month, but one race is still uncertain.
  • This edition of Vital Signs explores the latest potentially dangerous trend on social media called the eraser challenge.

Correction: An earlier version of this post stated a rally would  be held today for Jordan Edwards. It's a press conference announcing a planned rally.
