Top Stories: North Texas Senator Wants Plan To Overhaul Education Funding

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: The head of the state’s Senate Finance Committee wants a group of senators to come up with a plan to overhaul the state’s system for funding public education.

Jane Nelson of Flower Mound yesterday asked senators to look at how other states calculate the amount of funding provided to their public schools.

State House Speaker Joe Straus has said he wants the legislature to get rid of the so-called Robin Hood system. School districts with high property tax wealthy currently have to share their tax revenue with poorer districts in the state. 

Meanwhile, public school educators this year have urged lawmakers to increase the amount of money it sends to public school districts.

  • The Richardson school district wants to get high school students interested in the medical field early.  They’re learning about all kinds of health care jobs, from emergency medical technician to nurse’s aide.
