The top local stories this afternoon from KERA News:

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings filed a lawsuit Monday to try to stop the Dallas Police and Fire Pension Fund from allowing retirees to pull their deferred retirement funds from the ailing system. Since August, members have withdrawn $500 million – and that has only worsened the fund’s finances.

Other stories this afternoon:

  • North Texas Native American representatives say they’re pleased the Army Corps of Engineers has denied a permit for a key section of the Dakota Access pipeline in North Dakota. Yolanda Bluehorse is a member of the Rosebud Sioux tribe, and spoke Monday afternoon in downtown Dallas. A Dallas-based company, Energy Transfer Partners, is behind the pipeline.
  • A proposed bill from a Tarrant County lawmaker is causing a stir in education circles. Texas Senator Konni Burton says the bill is intended to bolster parents’ rights to information about their children, but as KERA’s Christopher Connelly reports, critics say it’s vaguely worded, and they worry it could put LGBT kids at risk.
