Top Stories: New Poll Shows Gap Narrowing Between Trump and Clinton

Graphic by Emily Albracht/Texas Tribune

The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

With less than two weeks to go before the Nov. 8 election, the polling gap between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is narrowing in Texas.

A new University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll shows Trump with a lead of just three percentage points – surprising in a state where GOP presidential candidates have won by double digits for nearly two decades.

There’s mixed enthusiasm for both candidates in this latest poll. While 47 percent of Trump’s supporters say they want him to be president, 53 percent said they just don’t want Clinton.

Clinton’s voters were more positive: 66 percent say they primarily want her as commander-in-chief. Still a third of her supporters said their main reason for choosing her is they just don’t want a Trump presidency.

Editor's note: The version of this story that aired on the radio mistakenly said Trump's polling numbers were shrinking; his numbers are actually up slightly. It's the gap between the two candidates that's shrinking. We've corrected the web post.
