Top Stories: Majority Of Texas Republicans Still Support Trump; Movie Musical History

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: President Trump is still popular with Texas Republicans, according to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll.

While 79 percent of Republicans said they approve of the job the president is doing, 92 percent of Democrats disapprove. Fifty-five percent of independent voters approved of Trump's performance.

Trump got better marks from men and white voters than any other demographic. However, nearly two-thirds of Texas voters said the country is more divided since he became president.

  • Today's the deadline for U.S. cities to turn in their bids to host Amazon's proposed second headquarters. North Texas is submitting a regional pitch, compiled by the Dallas Regional Chamber and the Fort Worth Chamber.
  • Irving-based Fluor has won a federal contract to help restore power in hurricane-damaged Puerto Rico. Since Hurricane Maria struck a month ago, about 86 percent of Puerto Rico remains without power.
  • The Big Screen dives into musical film history with Sean Griffin, whose new book is called "Free and Easy: A Defining History of the American Film Musical Genre."
