The top local stories this afternoon from KERA News:

The Dallas Zoo is working to make their gorillas more heart healthy. To do that, they’re trying to get an accurate blood pressure reading for the animals. But that’s been quite a challenge. KERA's Stephanie Kuo visited the zoo and found out it takes months of training and trust.

Other stories:

  • Allstate today said it expects insurance losses of about $593 million in August after Hurricane Harvey left a path of destruction along the Texas Gulf Coast. The Insurance Council of Texas estimates overall insured losses from Harvey at nearly $19 billion. That includes an estimate from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in which $11 billion in payments will go to homeowners with flood insurance. Those flood losses would be the second highest on record, trailing only Hurricane Katrina's $16 billion.

  • Novelist Deborah Crombie is a North Texas native who lives in a century-old home in McKinney. Yet around the world, she's known as the author of the best-selling Kincaid/James series. Murder mysteries, all 17 of them lovingly set in England. For this week’s Artist Spotlight, Jerome Weeks sat down for some tea with Crombie.
