Mar 17, 2016

The top stories this afternoon from KERA News: Funeral services were held on Thursday for Jose Cruz, the teenager who was shot and killed by an off-duty Farmers Branch police officer. Hundreds of mourners gathered in northwest Dallas to remember the 16-year-old.

Officer Ken Johnson was arrested Wednesday on charges of murder and aggravated assault. Johnson left Dallas County jail Thursday morning, released on $150,000 bond.

The Dallas Children’s Theater has started an experiment with its new show, ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.” It invited five families to read the original book, talk about it and see an early rehearsal.

The idea was to deepen family engagement, but for one young girl, that happened in a profound way no one expected.

Hundreds of bands are vying for attention this week at SXSW in Austin. Brad Dolbeer, assistant program director at  KXT 91.7, plans to watch as many of the bands as possible. He talked with KERA’s Anne Bothwell about who he’s excited to see.
