The top local stories this evening from KERA News:

The House Minority Leader was in Dallas on Wednesday. At a rally with Texas Democrats, Nancy Pelosi weighed in on the state’s new ban on so-called sanctuary cities. Under the law local officials who don’t cooperate with federal immigration authorities could be charged with a crime or removed from office.

Other stories this evening:

  • Governor Greg Abbott today signed new laws aimed at reforming the state’s troubled child welfare system. Data last year showed Texas was failing to check on thousands of children at the highest risk of abuse or neglect.

  • If the United States ever comes under nuclear attack, a plan exists to keep most of our top leaders safe. Today on Think, Krys Boyd talked about our “continuity of government” plans with journalist and historian Garrett M. Graff.

  • Going to school in a tough neighborhood has its challenges, even for high achiever like Joel Luera. He’s one of the kids KERA’s been following since 8th grade in our American Graduate series Class of ’17. He gets his diploma from W. W. Samuell High School this week and as Stella Chavez reports, the high school debater’s road to graduation hasn’t been easy.
