Top Stories: Dallas School Board Votes Against Tax Increase

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: The Dallas school board last night voted against putting tax ratification election before voters this fall.

The proposed 13-cent tax hike would have raised $100 million to fund early childhood education, as well as early college programs in high school. The district also wanted to expand a program that pays top teachers who take jobs in some of the district’s toughest schools.

The vote against a tax increase comes a year after voters approved a $1.6 billion school bond package for DISD.

Other stories this morning:

  • The group behind Klyde Warren Park in downtown Dallas wants to expand it, and use city money to pay for part of it. Jody Grant with the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation is asking the city to kick in 40 million dollars in bond funds, but that drew mixed reaction from Park board members yesterday. Some members preferred using that money to help repair existing facilities. The Parks and Recreation Department says it needs more than 2 billion dollars to renovate, replace, and expand existing park facilities.
  • In our Friday Conversation, Gaby Natale talks about the humble beginnings of her Spanish-language talk show SuperLatina. The show, based in Fort Worth, won two Daytime Emmy Awards this spring.
