Top Stories: Dallas Police To Roll Out Sponge Guns; Different Take On Race Conversation

The top local stories this afternoon from KERA News: The Dallas Police Department will soon have a new weapon in its arsenal: something called a sponge gun. It launches a hardened foam projectile and gives officers an alternative to shooting a gun with bullets.

In the ongoing conversation on race and identity, we don’t hear much about how white people experience their race. But in the "Whiteness Project," candid video interviews explore what it means to be white today.

Other stories this afternoon: 

  • Blackie Sherrod, the legendary longtime North Texas sportswriter, died Thursday. Sherrod worked for more than six decades at Texas newspapers.
  • Dallas Cowboys fans are awaiting who the team will pick this year in the NFL Draft. Dallas will choose fourth, and it’s the first time the Cowboys have had a selection in the top five since 2003.
