Top Stories: Dallas’ Pension Troubles Top Among Texas Cities

The top local stories this morning from KERA News: A recent report spelled more bad news for the troubled Dallas Police and Fire Pension Fund. Credit rating and financial analysis firm Moody’s found Dallas has one of the highest pension shortfalls among U.S. cities.

The Texas Tribune reports Dallas came in second on that list, just behind Chicago. Dallas has unfunded pension liabilities of $7.6 billion dollars- more than five times the city’s operating revenues. Moody’s has downgraded Dallas’ bond rating several times due to pension fund troubles.

The Dallas City Council Wednesday will discuss a plan to save the Police and Fire Pension Fund from insolvency. The fund is expected to go broke in 12 years if no changes are made.

Other stories this morning:

  • A rare disease affecting the nervous system is on the rise again. After a downturn last year, there’ve been 89 cases this year in 33 states, including Texas. Five of those in Collin, Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties.
  • The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and its musicians will vote on a tentative contract agreement Wednesday. Musicians called a strike in early September and the orchestra had canceled all concerts through the end of the year. The Fort Worth Symphony has been trying to close a $700,000 deficit.
