The top local stories this morning from KERA News: Tarrant County Republicans held a presidential straw poll this weekend in Arlington. Texas Senator Ted Cruz was the winner, though Donald Trump had his supporters as well.

Nearly 700 people voted in the straw poll. Cruz collected 39 percent; Trump finished second with 27 percent. No one else in the Republican presidential field topped 10 percent.

The event drew hundreds to he Arlington Convention Center. Trump's booth was festooned with red, white and blue balloons and giant cardboard posters of Trump in his trucker hat.

Nearby, Cruz's table was also buzzing.

“I like the fact that he’s from Texas, he’s a conservative, he’s a godly man,” said Mary Smith of Arlington, who came out to support Cruz. She helped with his run for the Senate in 2012, and is counting on him to continue representing conservative evangelicals if he makes it to the White House.

Cleburne resident Alice Massengale says she likes some of what Trump has to say.

“But a lot of the things he says are also said by Ted Cruz in a different manner, and I also like that Ted Cruz has some experience working in Washington,” Massengale said.
