The top local stories this morning from KERA News:

Although the U.S. Justice Department says it’s no longer contesting the Texas voter ID law, a hearing on the rules will move forward today as scheduled.

The hearing will determine whether Texas lawmakers intended to discriminate against minorities when they passed the voter ID bill in 2013.

A federal judge last week denied a request from Texas and the Trump administration to delay. The state wanted the hearing to occur after the legislative session ends in June, so lawmakers could have a chance to modify the existing voter ID law.

Other stories this morning:

  • A state senator from Dallas has apologized for his behavior at a meeting with group of Richardson students.
  • Our series “Race, Poverty and the Changing Face of Schools” continues in Duncanville, another school that’s undergone a massive demographic change. One thing has remained constant though: the girls’ basketball team keeps winning.
