Texas Local Contests

By Shelley Kofler

Dallas, TX – Tuesday night it appeared as though Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez might be headed for a runoff race with Democrat Roy Williams. But a late surge of votes made Valdez the democrats clear choice.

Not so for Republicans who want to unseat her. Former Irving Police Chief Lowell Cannaday received 41-percent of the vote, but not enough to avoid a runoff with former Sheriff Jim Bowles who had the job for 19 years.

The race to succeed retiring state house member Fred Hill of Richardson, also produced a runoff . Republicans Randy Dunning , a former Garland city Council member Angie Chen Button, a DART board member, will square off on April 8.

At least one North Texas incumbent was unseated last night. State representative Thomas Latham, a former Garland police commander was defeated by former mesquite mayor Mike Anderson in the Republican primary.
