North Texas is bracing for its first big severe weather event this spring.

Amber Elliott is a forecaster with the National Weather Service.

Elliott:  Main threats will be large hail and damaging winds.  There’s also a small potential for tornadoes. And then later on this evening, as rain becomes more widespread, we look at possibly a flash flooding event.

Elliott says the heaviest rainfall will be east of I-35, maybe 3 to 6 inches – enough to cause widespread flash flooding.

DART says high winds ahead of thunderstorms are interfering with rail signals and switches. As a result, trains are running on a 15 to 20 minute delay.

Oncor, meanwhile, is making progress restoring power to customers left without because of high winds and toppled or disrupted power lines.

Golf ball-sized hail has been reported west of Fort Worth.

Winds are blamed for tipping over an 18 wheeler in Grapevine, and an awning collapse at a shopping center in Hurst.

US Supreme Court rejects Hugo water rights appeal

The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected the city of Hugo's appeal for the right to sell water in southeastern Oklahoma to the city of Irving, Texas.

The court released its decision without comment on Monday. The ruling upholds a 2-1 ruling by the 10th Circuit Court of appeals to dismiss Hugo's lawsuit.

The city wanted to sell about 65 billion gallons of water to Irving - which is just northwest of Dallas.

The lower court's ruling said neither Hugo nor Irving had legal standing to sue the state of Oklahoma.

Family sick, carbon monoxide at Irving hotel

Hospital officials say five members of an Oklahoma family have gotten sick from apparent carbon monoxide exposure at a Dallas-area hotel.

An Irving Fire Department spokesman says the incident happened Monday at the Hyatt Place in the Las Colinas district. Part of the hotel was evacuated. Assistant Chief Rusty Wilson says the carbon monoxide source possibly was a hotel boiler room.

Officials with Las Colinas Medical Center say a man, a pregnant woman and their three children, ages 1, 8 and 10, were treated for nausea and headaches.

Hospital officials say the family from Tulsa, Okla., was on vacation in the Dallas area when they started feeling sick. The father drove the family to the hospital.

The family has been transferred to another undisclosed hospital for further treatment.

Infant hurt in East Texas alcohol incident

An East Texas man has been accused of providing alcohol to his girlfriend's son and the baby ended up hospitalized in critical condition.

Tyler police said Monday that Ronchekal Yon allegedly was intoxicated, put vodka in a cup and gave it to the year-old boy while the mother was present at their home.

One of her relatives arrived Saturday and called 911. Police say Demarion Crow had a blood alcohol level higher than 0.20, or more than twice the legal limit for an adult to drive.

Yon has been charged with injury to a child, with bond set at $100,000. Online records did not list an attorney for him.

Police say the boy will be placed with Child Protective Services when discharged from a hospital. Further details weren't released Monday.

Kung fu instructor gets 8 years for sex assault

A Dallas-area kung fu instructor has been sentenced to eight years in prison for sexually assaulting one of his female students in 2004.

Prosecutors in Collin County say 48-year-old Ricky Earl Anderson of Frisco was sentenced Friday by a jury after his conviction on charges of sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child.

Anderson was placed on 10 years' probation and will have to register as a sex offender for life.

Prosecutors say Anderson assaulted the girl at his apartment in the Dallas suburb of Richardson when she was 15. Authorities say the girl reported the assault to police in nearby Garland three years later.

According to court testimony, Anderson had lived or taught kung fu in several Dallas-area cities and Las Vegas in recent years.
